JACS LIBRARY - OUR STORIES
From my mother's Jewish Cookery book,
Leah Leonard, Crown Publishers,1949
Under Calendar of Jewish Holidays and Food Association:
"PURIM FOOD LORE: One of the folk expressions relating to Purim custom
reflects the significant sociological phenomena of an extremely small
percentage of alcoholism among Jews. On Purim, it is customary to eat
drink and be merry. Thus the saying:
'A gantz yor shikker und Purim nichter!'
All year drunk and Purim not (drunk).'"
Book goes on:
"Thus to chide a Jew for being 'nichter' on Purim and 'shikker' at all
other times is the subtlest of pleasantries."
Comment: so who were all these miniscule number of Jewish drunks that
they got around to making nursery rhymes over it.
