Friday December 27, 1996 Erev Shabbat Tevet 17, 5757 Vayichi (Genesis 47:28-50:26) Something to think about: In this week s parsha, Yaakov (Jacob) bestows his final blessing upon his children. His message is poignant, often cryptic and always individualized. [I would like to share part of lecture by one of my mentors, Rabbi Gedalya Schorr, that I have translated from his book, Ohr Gedalyahu. [I know that this is different than my the regular fax style, bear with me, I think that the message is worth it.] At the conclusion of the blessings, the Torah reiterates, Each according to his blessing, he blessed them (49:28) Rash i comments that after giving each his own individualized blessing, he gave them a single inclusive blessing, [that would join them]. Each family received its own blessing because each unit has its own path in serving G-d. Each has its own special heavenly entrance. Yaakov blessed each tailored appropriately to his spiritual source. The nature of blessing is the expansion of G-d s presence. Through blessing the individua, Divine nature of each family would develop and expand. When Yaakov blessed each, he wanted to include an encompassing blessing that would in effect allow them to grow but not break apart; each would still remain identified as a part of The children of Israel . As far back in our history as the twelve sons of Jacob, we have had our different styles and natures. It was the eternal wisdom of our forefather Jacob that recognized and in a sense encouraged our separate identities. We would develop, each in our own way. We would even have different styles and paths in our service of Hashem (G-d). Yet the real trick is how do I grow as an individual without cutting myself off from my people. How do I respect the differences of others without seeing them as strangers. The Torah does furnish us with fertile room for growth while also serving as a structure that provides guidelines and boundaries. We need the blessing of Jacob to help us appreciate our differences and similarities. For Columbus, Ohio: Candle lighting-4:56 Shabbat Ends-6:00 Good Shabbos!! Rabbi Hirsh Michel Chinn
